On Sunday 24th March when the feeling that spring had arrived Carmarthen Quins hosted the last district mini festival for their cohort at under 9s and 10s in Abergwili.

With the sun shining down the Quins Under 9s played against Newcastle Emlyn, Tycroes and Tumble. With a week off the previous week the squad certainly was energised and went to work from the first whistle. Taking on Tycroes in the first game the young Quins won the toss and started the game and some neat inter passing by Louie Thomas and Fin Robinson and strong running the speedster Macs Hastings found his way to the corner for the opening score.

In defence the Quins side were equally committed with Elliw Williams tracking back and making tackles who in conjunction with Sion Jones saved many a try being scored and the securing turnovers for the Quins.

In the second game against Tumble it was very much the same but the Quins were now into their groove and some mazy running from Ioan James splitting the defence Lucas Lewis was on hand to dive over for a score. Celt Evans caused all sorts of problems for the opposition by running straight and low causing tacklers to fall off him making space for moe rampaging runs from Kian Williams and Finley Kelly.

In the third and final game of the morning when the team could be forgiven for tiring they seemed to take it up a notch against a bigger Newcastle Emlyn side and tacked their opponents to a standstill securing many turnovers against an equally committed side. Rhys Evans tackled well time and time again to get the ball back to the Quins before they were able to pass the ball between themselves and make their way to the try line.

As the season draws to a close for this group both coaches and parents alike are proud and extremely happy with how the team is developing.

In other results the Under 8s enjoyed a successful morning at their festival in Tycroes with tries galore, the Under 10s were rampant in attack and solid in defence in their festival where they only conceded two tries all morning. The Under 11s attended a festival in Bynea and again enjoyed the sunshine and played some fantastic rugby. The Under 12s hosted Valley Ravens and ran out winners by an impressive 38 7.

The under 13s hosted High School Dublin on Saturday and played against a side mixed with under 13s, 14s and 15s and in a good test as they head to the final of the Carmarthenshire Cup they were eventually beaten by the Irish side when their older players took the field bu they can hold their heads up high. The udner 14s also played the Valley Ravens and ran out winners 52 - nil.

Finally the Girls Under 15s team after many weeks break took the field against Gowerton but were unlucky to be on the receiving end of a loss but all girls played their hearts out.

Notwithstanding the results over the weekend the important thing for Carmarthen Quins is that they have a vibrant and enjoyable environment for mini and junior rugby that stands the Clubs future in good stead. With approximately 150 children in Abergwili alone on Sunday rugby is very much alive.
